ADHD Assessment and Treatment Process

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that requires a thorough assessment of symptoms across both childhood and adulthood. At our clinic, this process is conducted by a multidisciplinary team, including a psychologist and a psychiatrist. If ADHD is diagnosed and treatment is appropriate, our psychiatrist can prescribe medication and oversee your ongoing care.

Step 1 – Intake Appointment with Psychologist (In-Clinic)

Your assessment begins with a two-hour, in-person appointment with one of our psychologists. This session includes:

A comprehensive clinical and developmental history interview
Review of any relevant school, developmental, or psychological reports (please bring any available documents to this appointment)
A structured, ADHD-specific clinical interview

You are welcome to bring a family member or support person, though this is optional.

Step 2 – Rating Scales, Questionnaires, and Urine Drug Screening

Following the intake session, you will receive a set of rating scales and questionnaires by email. Please complete and return these at least three days before your psychiatrist appointment.

In line with prescribing regulations, a urine drug test is also required prior to starting stimulant medication.

A pathology referral for a urine drug test will be sent to you via SMS after your psychologist appointment
The urine drug test is fully covered by Medicare

Please note: The intake session is a diagnostic service and is not eligible for Medicare rebates. Most private health funds also do not cover the cost—please check with your insurer.

Step 3 – Psychiatrist Appointment (In-Clinic)

This consultation includes:

Review of intake notes and questionnaire results
Additional clinical and mental health history
Screening for co-occurring mental or physical health conditions
Discussion of diagnosis and treatment options
Initiation of ADHD treatment, if clinically appropriate

If any cardiovascular risk factors are identified, an ECG (electrocardiogram) may be recommended before starting medication. Your psychiatrist may also request input from your GP, cardiologist, or other treating specialists.

Follow-Up Appointments

At 1 month or 3 months after starting treatment
Then every 6 months
Eventually progressing to annual reviews, based on your clinical needs
All psychiatrist consultations are eligible for Medicare rebates.

Fees

Total cost for the full ADHD assessment: $1,400 (before Medicare rebates)

Purpose of the Assessment

The adult autism assessment determines whether an individual meets diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as outlined in the DSM-5-TR or ICD-11. The process also provides tailored recommendations for supports, accommodations, and therapeutic interventions.

Adults may seek an autism assessment for reasons such as:

Lifelong traits consistent with autism
Co-occurring mental health conditions (e.g., ADHD, anxiety)
Challenges in relationships, employment, or sensory regulation

Assessment Components

Pre-Assessment Screening

Standardized questionnaires
Developmental history forms (input from a parent or caregiver is helpful, if available)

Diagnostic Assessment

Conducted either jointly by a psychologist and psychiatrist or independently by psychiatrist, the assessment includes:

Neurodevelopmental interview exploring social, communication, sensory, and behavioral traits across life stages
Psychometric tests
Psychiatrist review and assessment of co-occurring conditions.

ADHD Assessment Fee Schedule

Payment Schedule:

Payment 1 - $200 – Deposit when registering (deposits are nonrefundable and part of the total cost)
Payment 2 - $600 – Due before psychologist appointment
Payment 3 - $600 – Due before psychiatrist appointment

Total Cost: $1,400

Notes:

Medicare rebates apply only to psychiatrist sessions with valid GP referral.
Psychologist appointments are not Medicare-rebatable.
NDIS or private health funding is not automatically applied.
Fees are not final until registration is completed and the deposit has been authorized.

Referral Requirements

A GP referral is required in order to access Medicare rebates for meetings with a psychiatrist.

Guidelines and Best Practice

Our clinic follows the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (Autism CRC, 2023), ensuring assessments meet the highest standard of clinical best practice.

Duration and Cost

Timeframe: The assessment typically includes 2–3 hours of direct contact with clinician(s), delivered over several appointments. The full process may span a few weeks to allow us review and formulate recommendations and prepare a report.
Cost: ASD assessment $1,800 for the assessment and letter to the GP with diagnosis/recommendations. A comprehensive diagnostic report for the NDIS or a third party is $700 (no Medicare rebates apply)..
Rebates: Medicare rebates (currently $399.45 in total) may apply to certain sessions with a psychiatrist.
Autism assessments are generally not covered by private health insurance or the NDIS. Please check directly with your fund or the NDIS before proceeding.

Access

In rare cases, access may be denied — if so, we will explain why. If any information we hold is inaccurate or incomplete, please notify us so we can record your corrections.
