ADHD Assessment and Treatment Process

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that requires a thorough assessment of symptoms across both childhood and adulthood. At our clinic, this process is conducted by a multidisciplinary team, including a psychologist and a psychiatrist. If ADHD is diagnosed and treatment is appropriate, our psychiatrist can prescribe medication and oversee your ongoing care.

Step 1 – Intake Appointment with Psychologist (In-Clinic)

Your assessment begins with a two-hour, in-person appointment with one of our psychologists. This session includes:

• A comprehensive clinical and developmental history interview
• Review of any relevant school, developmental, or psychological reports (please bring any available documents to this appointment)
• A structured, ADHD-specific clinical interview

You are welcome to bring a family member or support person, though this is optional.

Step 2 – Rating Scales, Questionnaires, and Urine Drug Screening

Following the intake session, you will receive a set of rating scales and questionnaires by email. Please complete and return these at least three days before your psychiatrist appointment.

In line with prescribing regulations, a urine drug test is also required prior to starting stimulant medication.

• A pathology referral for a urine drug test will be sent to you via SMS after your psychologist appointment
• The urine drug test is fully covered by Medicare

Please note: The intake session is a diagnostic service and is not eligible for Medicare rebates. Most private health funds also do not cover the cost—please check with your insurer.

Step 3 – Psychiatrist Appointment (In-Clinic)

This consultation includes:

• Review of intake notes and questionnaire results
• Additional clinical and mental health history
• Screening for co-occurring mental or physical health conditions
• Discussion of diagnosis and treatment options
• Initiation of ADHD treatment, if clinically appropriate

If any cardiovascular risk factors are identified, an ECG (electrocardiogram) may be recommended before starting medication. Your psychiatrist may also request input from your GP, cardiologist, or other treating specialists.

Follow-Up Appointments

• At 1 month or 3 months after starting treatment
• Then every 6 months
• Eventually progressing to annual reviews, based on your clinical needs
• All psychiatrist consultations are eligible for Medicare rebates.

Fees

Total cost for the full ADHD assessment: $1,200 (before Medicare rebates)

1. Purpose of the Assessment

The adult autism assessment determines whether an individual meets diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as outlined in the DSM-5-TR or ICD-11. The process also provides tailored recommendations for supports, accommodations, and therapeutic interventions.

Adults may seek an autism assessment for reasons such as:

• Lifelong traits consistent with autism
• Co-occurring mental health conditions (e.g., ADHD, anxiety)
• Challenges in relationships, employment, or sensory regulation

2. Assessment Components

a. Pre-Assessment Screening

• Standardised questionnaires
• Developmental history forms (input from a parent or caregiver is helpful, if available)

b. Diagnostic Assessment – Multidisciplinary Consensus Team

Conducted jointly by a psychologist and psychiatrist, the assessment includes:

• Initial psychiatric evaluation
• Neurodevelopmental interview exploring social, communication, sensory, and behavioural traits across life stages
• Psychometric testing

c. Collateral Information

• Input from family members or review of past reports (e.g., school or workplace)
• A phone consultation may be arranged to gather early developmental history when needed

d. Standardised Measures (if indicated)

• Cognitive assessment (e.g., WAIS-IV) to clarify intellectual functioning
• Assessments of executive functioning or adaptive behaviour, where relevant

3. Referral Requirements

A GP referral is not required unless you wish to access Medicare rebates, such as for the psychiatric consultation.

4. Guidelines and Best Practice

Our clinic follows the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (Autism CRC, 2023), ensuring assessments meet the highest standard of clinical best practice.

5. Duration and Cost

• Timeframe: The assessment typically includes 1–3 hours of direct contact with clinicians, delivered over several appointments. The full process may span a few weeks to allow for team review, formulation of recommendations, and report preparation.
• Cost: Approximately $2,500, inclusive of assessment sessions and a comprehensive diagnostic report.
• Rebates: Medicare rebates may apply to certain components (e.g., psychiatric consultation). Autism assessments are generally not covered by private health insurance.

6. Outcomes

Following the assessment, you will receive:

• A feedback session to discuss the findings
• A clear diagnostic outcome, including whether ASD criteria are met and the level of support needs
• A comprehensive written report outlining:
  • Diagnostic rationale and summary of traits
  • Recommendations for therapy, education, workplace, or NDIS access
  • Suggested accommodations and support strategies

Combined Autism (ASD) and ADHD Assessment

Effective from 16 June 2025

What the Assessment Involves:

1. Comprehensive psychiatric assessment, including an ADHD-focused interview
2. ASD-focused assessment with a psychologist
3. Standardised questionnaires completed outside of appointment times
4. Review of collateral information, such as school reports or previous assessments, and developmental history from a family member (if appropriate)
5. Multidisciplinary team case discussion
6. Integrated diagnostic report (completed within 3–4 weeks of the final session)
7. Feedback session with the psychiatrist:
   • Review of findings and diagnosis
   • Initiation of ADHD treatment if clinically indicated

Feedback Session:
Conducted by the psychiatrist. Eligible for Medicare rebates with a valid GP referral. Includes discussion of diagnostic outcomes and treatment planning.

ADHD Treatment (if applicable):
If ADHD is diagnosed and pharmacological treatment is appropriate, it may be initiated during the feedback session. This is included in the overall assessment cost.

Medicare and Funding Information:
Medicare rebates apply only to sessions conducted by the psychiatrist with a valid GP referral. Psychology assessments are not eligible for Medicare rebates as they are diagnostic, not therapeutic.
External funding (e.g., NDIS, private health) is not automatically applied. Please inform us before booking if you have approved funding so we can make appropriate arrangements.

Ongoing Treatment and Follow-Up:
Psychiatrist follow-up appointments are billed separately. Standard follow-up fee: $250 (prior to Medicare rebate).

Financial Disclosure

Effective from 26 May 2025

Mind and Brain is a private medical practice committed to providing optimal care for each individual patient. Practice fees may be adjusted from time to time to reflect changes in Medicare rebates, operating costs, and professional services.

Patient Consent to Collect & Disclose Information

The Privacy Act 1988 requires medical practitioners to obtain consent from their patients to collect, use, or disclose personal information.

Collection

My practice staff and I will collect information necessary to properly advise and treat you. This may include:

• Full medical history
• Family medical history
• Ethnicity
• Contact details
• Medicare and private health fund details
• Billing and account details
• Clinical evaluations

Information is normally collected directly from you. In some situations, and with your consent, we may obtain information from other sources. In emergency situations, we may need to collect information from relatives or other sources without your prior consent.

Use and Disclosure

With your consent, we will use and disclose your information for purposes such as:

• Account keeping and billing
• Communication with your referring doctor
• Keeping other health providers informed
• Referral to another doctor or health care provider
• Practice management
• Quality assurance, practice accreditation, complaint handling, and ongoing research
• Notification to medical defence organisations or insurers
• Preventing or reducing serious threats to life, health, or safety
• Legal obligations, such as court production, mandatory child abuse reporting, or communicable disease notifications

Access

You are entitled to access your health records at a mutually convenient time. A fee may apply if costs are incurred to provide access. In rare cases, access may be denied — if so, we will explain why. If any information we hold is inaccurate or incomplete, please notify us so we can record your corrections. Please note, the original record cannot be erased.
