FAQ’s

Do I need a referral?

A referral from your General Practitioner is required for all new patients. Patients also need to be located in WA as we are unable to provide treatment for individuals outside of WA. If you already have a referral that is not expired and have not attended any appointments under that referral you may use that referral when contacting us.

What is your scope of practice?

Our clinic scope of practice is Adult ADHD and Neurostimulation (rTMS). Our psychiatrist does not specialize in Addiction or Perinatal Psychiatry and does not accept referrals for medical-legal reports or autism assessments.

Do you accept referrals for TMS Treatment?

We accept referrals for TMS Treatment.

To be eligible for the Medicare rebate the person receiving treatment must have a valid Medicare card and meet the following criteria:

a. has not previously received TMS; and

b. is at least 18 years old; and

c. is diagnosed with a major depressive episode; and

d. has failed to receive satisfactory improvement for the major depressive episode despite the adequate trialing of at least 2 different classes of antidepressants, unless contraindicated; and

e. has undertaken psychological therapy, if clinically appropriate.

Do you accept referrals for Adult ADHD assessment?

Our psychiatrist has limited capacity to accept new patients who are WA residents aged 21 to 55 for ADHD assessment. Please read about our ADHD Assessment Process here.

What should my GP include in my referral?

Your referral would need to specify a reason for your assessment, current symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, personal/developmental and substance use and alcohol history.

How do I make a booking?

We have updated our process and now have a three-step process for making initial bookings.

Step 1 – Upload referral and answer short questionnaire.

Step 2 – Triage process takes around 5 business days, and we will contact you by email about the outcome of your referral. You can proceed to step 3 after you receive our email confirming a time for your initial appointment.

Step 3 – Online registration and deposit.

How do I attend my Telehealth Appointment?

Attending a Telehealth Appointment is simple and convenient, and there is no additional cost for your appointment. All Telehealth appointments are by appointment only so if you do not have appointment you will need to contact us. You will need a device with a camera, microphone and speaker, and internet access. A headset is also recommended so that you can hear everything that is discussed clearly. We use simple wired headsets for appointments as these have proved the most reliable and easy to use. If you are not sure if your device and internet connection will work you can run a pre-call test anytime before your appointment.

Before attending your Telehealth appointment make sure you have a quiet and private location to meet with our Psychiatrist. It is important that yourself and the doctor are able to see and hear each other clearly, and without interruptions during your entire appointment. Initial appointments can last over an hour, so make sure you have a comfortable spot ready for when your appointment begins. If your location is inappropriate because it is not private or free from interruptions your appointment will not be able to proceed and you will be charged a cancellation fee of $250 for initial appointments or $100 for subsequent appointments. Cancellation fees do not attract a Medicare rebate so the cancellation fee is entirely out of pocket.

Payment for your appointment – before your appointment and (up to 7 days before your appointment) you will need to visit our website, go to existing ADHD patients and authorize payment for the appointment using the ‘Telehealth Appointments Pre-Authorize Payment’ button. After your appointment is completed, we will charge your card and process your Medicare rebate so your rebate will arrive in your Medicare nominated account shortly after your payment is processed.

Please make sure your location is appropriate and you are ready at the time of your appointment to start. When it is close to the time for your appointment connect to our Telehealth waiting room. Connecting a few minutes beforehand and making sure everything is working before your appointment is recommended. You can tap or click on Start a Video Call and you will be placed in a waiting room and will be connected with our Psychiatrist as close to your appointment time as possible. Sometimes there may be small delays of up to 5 – 10 minutes, but do not worry, we will know if you are waiting and your Telehealth call will be answered as soon as possible.

Do you offer bulk billing?

Psychiatrists, like other medical specialists, set their own fees. Our fees at Mind and Brain are as set low as possible to allow us to maintain a viable practice and provide a high quality service. Our fees do include an out-of-pocket amount and unfortunately we are not able to offer bulk billing. If you see a psychiatrist in a public hospital or community health service, you generally won’t have to pay and will be bulk billed. Please contact our reception if you would like more information about our appointment fees.

Is there free parking?

There is free parking across the road from the clinic at James Cook Park and also nearby at the Westfield Whitford City shopping center. There are 3 visitor car bays at the ground level of 31 Green Road and also a disabled car bay near the front entrance of the building.

Is there a cancellation fee?

We respect you might have personal circumstances affecting your attendance and we will always consider your situation before charging a cancellation fee. Cancellation fees are $250 for initial appointments and $100 for follow-up appointments and are charged for ‘no shows’ and cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice. Cancellations include situations where you are in an unsuitable location at the time of your appointment, and the appointment cannot proceed. Please contact us as soon as you are aware you will not be able to attend an appointment or unable to find a suitable location to attend your appointment.
